- Dorothy 1.1
- -----------
-
- Included in the Stuffit Archive should be the following:
-
- Dorothy
- Dorothy instructions (WriteNow format)
- Dorothy instructions.MW (MacWrite format)
- ReadMe Dorothy 1.1 (this file)
- Sample Dorothy search
- Sample Form letter
- Menus
-
- I strongly advise you to read the documentation, because Dorothy is a
- very powerful program and may not be simple to set up without the docs. If,
- however, you want to brave it, then you should know that you cannot use
- the menus as they are given to you. You must go through the menus with
- MenuEdit or some other similar program and edit ALL the optional data
- fields so that they are correct for your system.
-
- I hope you find Dorothy useful. Remember, Dorothy is postcardware, so you must
- send me your comments! I can be reached at the following:
-
- Forest Hills BBS: 718-268-1240, send message to Tommy Brown (the sysop).
- GEnie: P.L.COOPER
- America Online: Tommy6
- Compuserve: 70314,3342
-
- US Mail: Tommy Brown

- Last minute notes
- -----------------
-
- 1. Second Sight 2.1 and earlier have a bug with credited time, as follows: If user
- John Doe normally had a 45 minute time limit, but spent 10 minutes chatting with you,
- his time limit would be temporarily raised to 55 minutes. However, upon returning from
- an external application, his time limit would be raised to 65 minutes. This is Not Good.
- Second Sight version 2.2B25 (the latest version at this writing) still has this bug.
- By default, Dorothy compensates for this bug by subtracting the credited time from
- the time limit. However, if the version of Second Sight that you are using has fixed
- the credited time bug, then this may actually detract from a user's time limit.
- For example, a patch was released on GEnie (by me, in fact!) which would fix this
- bug.
- If you find that users are losing time, then you can override this behavior by using
- ResEdit:
-
- A. Open up Dorothy with ResEdit.
- B. Double-click on the DATA resource.
- C. Double-click on the one that has 128 in the ID column.
- D. Scroll all the way to the bottom.
- E. There are three main columns of information. You want the middle column.
- The last eight letters of the middle column should read: FFFF 0000. You want
- to select that FFFF and change it to 0000.
- F. Save your changes and quit ResEdit.
-
- Don't worry too much about making a mistake. If Dorothy sees that you did something
- wrong, it will reset itself. You'll then have to do this over. If you're not sure if
- you did it correctly, launch Dorothy, and then follow the above ResEdit instructions
- again and see if your changes are still there (ie does it still say 0000 0000 or did
- it change back to FFFF 0000?)
-
- If you're thoroughly confused, don't worry. Chances are, you won't need to do this.
-
- 2. Second Sight 2.2 beta users: Dorothy is now completely compatible with SS 2.2 beta.
- It will use hardware handshaking and the GPi pin when called for, it can deal with
- locked baud rates, and whenever you send messages, the userlog is correctly
- updated. However, Dorothy does not use the STR# resources in Second Sight, and
- it does not use the prompt prefix and suffix character (except in a few cases).
- This will all be updated in the next version.
-
- 3. The next version will hopefully be version 2.0. Dorothy version 2.0 will support
- QWK mail packets. Briefly, QWK is a standard for offline mail reading. When used in
- conjunction with a program called Freddie, this will allow users of Second Sight BBSes
- to read messages while not online the BBS. (IBM users can use a regular QWK mail reader).
- Unfortunately, QWK is a lot of work, so I will probably have to charge for verison
- 2.0. The way it will work is that version 2.0 will be distributed on the same terms
- as this version — as postcardware — but with the QWK option disabled. As soon as you
- pay for it, you will receive a program which will modify your copy of Dorothy to enable
- QWK mail reading. That way, you will not have to pay if you simply use Dorothy as a
- sysop utility, but if you use Dorothy also as a QWK mail program, you will have
- to pay. I have not yet decided on the price, but it will be in the vicinity of $15.

- Additional acknowledgements
- ---------------------------
- Nick Sklavounakis has been invaluble in helping me to distribute Dorothy throughout
- the FidoNet network, through his BBS, NotEvenOdd Mac, at 718-997-1189. His name did
- not make the manual (sorry about that!) but without him, Dorothy may not have ever
- reached you. So thanks, Nick!

- Changes history
- ---------------
- Version 1.0 - initial release
- Version 1.1 - Added ability to add comments to the user displays in commands 106
- and 114. See the docs for details. Added compatibility with Second Sight 2.2 beta.
- Sped up the "search through survey" command. Added command #110, validate files.
- I took out some code which I believe was causing bus errors on some machines, though
- I'm not positive if this fix worked or not.
